Dreaming of combining traditional east with psychedelic west
This project reimagines Tang Xianzu’s Four Dreams of Linchuan through a fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetics and vibrant, digital psychedelic visuals. The director wanted to create visuals inspired by the poetic themes and dreamlike narratives of Ming Dynasty theater, the sound-responsive visuals flow seamlessly with a traditional dancer’s movements, inspired by the fluidity of her flowy costume. The visuals echoed the dancer's motions, blending generative art with the rhythm of the music, creating a performance where every moment felt like a new dream unfolding on stage. This project celebrates the harmony of tradition and innovation, the elegance of Chinese culture, bold energy of contemporary visual storytelling, bringing ancient stories to life in a contemporary, immersive form.
This project holds a special place in my heart because it was the first time I discovered my passion for designing for dance and working with the human body in motion. There’s something truly joyful and liberating about creating visuals that celebrate movement and space. I also loved engaging with a production deeply rooted in history and culture, helping to reimagine it for the stage. The most rewarding part was seeing people from that culture experience it and hearing their reflections—it was a deeply moving and inspiring experience.
