VIRTUAL SET DESIGN Carnival, Faculty of Open Studies, Cairo University long plays festival, April 2019.

Carnival is based on Dario fo's play 'Isabella, Three Sailing Ships and a Con Man'. After my discussion with the director, I decided to borrow some techniques from the epic theatre in my design. Using the alienation technique, I was able to distance the Egyptian audience from the action, prevent them from developing a sentimental attachment to the events to urge them to process the message rationally. Therefore, I started my design process by browsing through middle ages European and Asian styles, subsequently stripping them from their distinct features. CGI and LED screens allowed me to change large scenes in front of the audience to break the fourth wall.
